Mechanical Engineering senior designs prototype for U.S. Air Force

Kevin McKee, mechanical engineering senior at Louisiana Tech University, designed and built a prototype facility protection tool for the Air Force Global Strike Command at a Design Sprint aimed at solving a recurring problem that the command encounters. […]

To make mini-organs grow faster, give them a squeeze

The closer people are physically to one another, the higher the chance for exchange, of things like ideas, information, and even infection. Now researchers at MIT and Boston Children’s Hospital have found that, even in the microscopic environment within a single cell, physical crowding increases the chance for interactions, in a way that can significantly alter a cell’s health and development. […]

New Specialty Module from Advanced Linear Devices Protects Ultra-Low-Voltage Designs from Overvoltage Damage

Advanced Linear Devices Inc. (ALD), a leader in specialty analog technology, announced a first-to-market low-power, low-voltage, high-precision voltage-clamp module. The SABMBOVP family is an ideal clamping solution for critical mission applications deployed in business, safety, and security products that are 5 V or below. When these systems fail or are interrupted, operations may be significantly impacted. These ultra-low-voltage designs are increasingly used in a variety of applications, including industrial IoT (IIoT), banking, transportation, and power systems. […]

'Space Has Opened For Commercial Activity,' DFJ's Jurvetson Tells CNBC

DFJ Venture partner Steve Jurvetson sat down with CNBC's Josh Lipton in San Francisco to explain his enthusiasm about the future of space exploration, and the investments he's making in the industry.

Venture capital firms have already committed more than $200 million to space-related startups, Lipton noted, saying Jurvetson and his colleague are highly appreciative of the money-making potential. […]

Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) has raised nearly £1.5 million ($1.99 million) in a new round of fundraising linked to a UK government grant. The company’s prospects have been buoyed by the increased focus on environmentally-friendly air transport, but HAV still needs to find another £140 million in order to fly its first production hybrid airship in early 2024. A very tiny alteration can help deepfakes escape detection

Last month, Sophie Wilmès, the prime minister of Belgium, appeared in an online video to tell her audience that the COVID-19 pandemic was linked to the "exploitation and destruction by humans of our natural environment." Whether or not these two existential crises are connected, the fact is that Wilmès said no such thing. Produced by an organization of climate change activists, the video was actually a deepfake, or a form of fake media created using deep learning. Deepfakes are yet another way to spread misinformation—as if there wasn't enough fake news about the pandemic already. […]
